"Global Warming is a Hoax!" Bumper Sticker

Today’s left has evolved in a curious direction since I was a kid.  What has remained constant is the search for a reason to put an end to freedom.  It’s hard to believe today, but the old reason why capitalism was bad was that it was inefficient.  A hundred years ago we were being told that socialism would increase efficiency by getting rid of wasteful competition and organizing all economic activity around a central plan.  Of course, after the many socialist experiments of the 20th century, it’s impossible to get anyone to believe that.  So unless they stop teaching 20th century history in schools (and can thus cover up a lot of inconvenient facts) they need a different reason to throw out freedom.  If you’re old enough to remember the 70s, you know that several different gasses have been blamed for causing the “greenhouse effect”.  It wasn’t until the 90s that they made two radical (no pun intended) improvements.  First, by blaming CO2, they provide government with an excuse to regulate absolutely everything including (theoretically) breathing.  Second, by changing the term to “global climate change” they positioned themselves to blame their enemies for absolutely anything that happens to the weather.  It’s warm, its cold, its mild, more hurricanes, no hurricanes, everything and anything can be blamed on a gas that is produced by every activity of man, beast or machine.  This has to be a socialist’s ultimate dream.  If people can be made to believe in it, then the socialists get absolute God-like control over everything that moves in the universe--all for the purpose of keeping us safe, of course. 

So what’s changed?  Well the leftists of my youth were prided themselves on their rationality.  When the “industrial” left was in the ascendance, it was all about practical efficiency and producing enough for the workers to be content.  Of course, that never happened and the workers starved.  But at least in theory it was concrete.  Now, with the “environmentalists” left on top, the whole enterprise has morphed into a pseudo religion complete with its own concept of “kosher” (i.e. organic) food [no offense!]; its own system of nature worship and human sacrifice.  The old ones you could dispute on a rational level.  Today’s environmentalist wackos live in their own world!
